About the book

Witches and wizards, talking cats and lightning bolts...  This is a historical fantasy set in late medieval England, in the fictional castle-village of Little Greneton.

Archibald Swithin is an orphaned page cursed with terrible fortune. One evening he stumbles into the swampy abode of Merlyn, a powerful wizard. Archie is drawn into a world of magic, mystery and danger.

He meets new friends, including a girl called Rose, the daughter of a wealthy knight, and Merlyn's grumpy talking owl, Orval.

But he also meets a new enemy, a dangerous warlock named Lismore, who threatens to destroy both Merlyn and his feeble apprentice.

Will he be defeated before he has begun his quest to be a wizard?

About the author

Read this amazing new voice. Benjamin Clarke is in Year 9 at St Ignatius’ College, Riverview. He enjoys Latin, French, Drama and Art and he loves travelling with his large and rowdy family. The spells in A Definition of Magic all have correct Latin names and the times and customs of Fifteenth Century England have been accurately portrayed in this lively story.

Benjamin has always wanted to be a fiction writer. A Definition of Magic was put aside and forgotten. He rescued it at the end of 2010 and wrote most of it with his spare time in the summer holidays.                                                                        http://benjaminromeclarke.blogspot.com/

This book was gripping from the start. From the moment Archie became Merlyn's apprentice to the final battle. (Can't give away too much info. You'll have to read it for yourself!)
I'd strongly recommend this book. It'll have you transported into the world of Little Greneton and have you flipping the pages in anticipation for what's going to happen next.

    An AMAZING read!

Can't wait until the next installment of this series!

The language is intricate and detailed. I really got the feel that I was there in the moment with Archie and Merlyn as they completed their quests and tasks. All the signs point to a master storyteller.
